Three of these books are made for slowing down: a dip net at the edge of a pond, a fern unfurling on a damp stone wall, a long walk among the fells. The fourth is Motor Sport, for anyone who would rather get round the lake as quickly as possible. Together these vintage Observer's Pocket Books make a lovely contrast, and their spines run from duck egg and cornflower blue to sage green and a bright racing red.

British Ferns first appeared in 1950, and the word British on this spine places it among the earlier printings, before the book was revised and the title shortened. Pond Life opens up the hidden world of water beetles, snails and dragonfly larvae that anyone with a jam jar will recognise. The Lake District belongs to the run of regional guides Warne added towards the end of the 1970s, with its lakes, passes and villages described in true pocket form, while Motor Sport, from 1975, captures the racing cars and drivers of its day.

Each book measures roughly 14.5 x 9.5cm (5.75 x 3.75 inches). The soft blues and greens make this a natural fit for a bathroom shelf or a garden room, perhaps beside a fern in a terracotta pot or a glass jar of pebbles. With the Lake District guide in the mix, they would also make a welcome present for anyone heading north for a walking holiday, or for a racing fan with a softer side.

All four are hardbacks in their original boards and come without dust jackets. There is light wear to the edges and corners and some gentle fading to the spines, and the pages are clean and readable throughout. Please look through the photos for a closer view.

Ponds, ferns, fells and a chequered flag: proof that the Observer's books really did cover everything.
