A handsome serif letter N, reclaimed from a traditional shop sign, with a gold painted wooden face and a vivid red metal edge running all the way around. The serifs give it a classic, almost bookish elegance, the kind of lettering once used above outfitters, bakers and booksellers, and the red sides add a punch of colour that changes as you see it from different angles.
For much of the twentieth century, British shopfronts were spelled out in gilded or painted letters like this, each one fixed individually to the fascia so the name could be read clearly from across the street. As shops changed hands and signage modernised, many were simply thrown away, which is why surviving letters with their original finishes are so popular with collectors today. This one wears its history openly, with crazing and small rubs to the gold, a few chips and scuffs along the edges, and its original fixing points on the back.
It measures 30 x 37 x 2 cm, tall and graphic enough to make a real statement on its own, propped on a shelf or hung on a wall.
We also have the matching letter O from the same sign, so you could display them together to spell ON or NO, or combine them with other reclaimed letters for a name, initials or a favourite word. On its own, it makes a lovely personal gift for a Nancy, Nathan or Noah, or a characterful touch in a child’s room, study or kitchen. The gold and red look wonderful against inky navy, forest green or warm plaster walls, and suit both industrial and traditional interiors.
Bring home the O as well, and you’ll have the final word in any household debate.
