Vintage Shop Sign Letter O in Gold and Red

A bold, beautifully worn letter O, almost certainly reclaimed from an old shopfront or fascia sign, with a gold painted wooden face and a bright pillar box red metal edge and back. Seen from the front it glows warmly; turn it to the side and that flash of red gives it a wonderful sense of depth and colour, just as it would have looked catching the eye of passers by on a high street.

Gilded and painted letters were the signature of the traditional British shopfront for generations, spelling out the names of grocers, drapers, ironmongers and tea rooms in proud capitals. As high streets changed, many of these letters were taken down and lost, so the survivors have become much sought after by collectors and interior lovers alike. This one shows its working life honestly, with small scuffs and rubbed patches to the gold, a few marks to the red, and the original fixing holes on the back.
