One of a kind
Three geese have put on their best blue ribbons and set off in single file across this vintage cast iron doorstop, mother at the front with her head held high and two smaller geese close behind, as if they have just been called in for tea. Each one has painted lashes, a bright orange beak and orange webbed feet, and the bows are picked out in a soft duck egg blue.
It is solid cast iron, hand painted in cream with a lightly speckled finish and set on a deep green base cast with a textured pattern of grass. It measures 18.5cm by 16cm by 5cm, compact enough to tuck beside a door without getting under your feet and heavy enough to hold it open.
Painted cast iron doorstops were made in their thousands for British homes from the Victorian era onwards, and farmyard birds have always been among the most loved designs. Geese suit a country kitchen especially well, bringing a little of the farmyard indoors without any of the noise.
The paint has the gentle wear you would hope for in a piece with some years behind it: a little rubbing to the beaks and heads, a few small chips to the bows, and a touch of rust showing along the edge of the base. The back is painted plain cream. None of it takes away from the colours, which are still fresh and cheerful.
Stand it by the back door with the wellies, line it up along a windowsill beside a jug of spring flowers, or give it to someone who keeps hens and would appreciate the company. It sits happily alongside our family of ducks and single goose if you would like to start a small flock of your own.
