Mid Century Etched Glass Ice Cream Coupes in Amber, Set of Three

Three small glass coupes with clear etched bowls, set on short stems and feet of warm amber glass, sold together as a trio. They date from around the 1960s or 1970s, when footed coupes were the proper way to serve ice cream at home, and the amber base was a favourite touch of the period, catching the light and throwing a little pool of gold onto the table.

Each bowl carries a delicate etched pattern that shows best when the glass is held up to a window, and the stems are sturdy, so these sit happily on a tray or a crowded dinner table without wobbling. Each coupe measures 9 x 7 cm, a generous size for two scoops of ice cream, a lemon posset or a chocolate mousse, and perfectly retro for a prawn cocktail if you are hosting a seventies supper.

Beyond dessert, we like them filled with sugared almonds or wrapped sweets at Christmas, holding rings and earrings on a dressing table, or with a single floating bloom and a tea light as a low centrepiece. Amber glass looks especially good with warm wood, linen and natural textures, and beside brass candlesticks or a pale vintage tablecloth the colour really sings. Three is a lovely number for styling: grouped in a triangle on a shelf they look intentional, and if you are dining for two, there is one spare for the cook.
