The Blue Loft

This oil painting by the Northern Irish artist Denis Thornton (1937 to 1999) shows the Shimna River tumbling over boulders through woodland, beneath the Mourne Mountains in County Down. Tall trees in fresh spring greens frame the scene on either side, while the river rushes towards the viewer in bright ribbons of turquoise and white. In the distance, the valley dissolves into a soft blue mist, touched here and there with hints of pink morning light. Two small figures stand on the rocks by the water's edge, giving a lovely sense of scale.

The Shimna flows through Tollymore Forest Park near Newcastle, a place Thornton returned to again and again. His river and forest scenes are among his best loved works, and examples of his painting are held in the Down County Museum collection. His confident brushwork is at its best here, with thick, lively strokes in the foaming water and delicate layers of haze in the trees beyond.

The painting is signed Denis Thornton to the lower right. On the reverse is the label of Alastair Kerr's Inverbeg Galleries at Luss on Loch Lomond, with the title "The Shimna River" handwritten in pencil. It measures 55 x 39 cm including its frame, a limed wooden moulding with warm grain, a linen slip and a white inner edge, and it is ready to hang.

The soft greens, blues and creams make this an easy painting to place. It would suit a sitting room, a bedroom or a study, and it brings a calming sense of the outdoors to a hallway or landing. Pair it with natural textures such as wool throws, oak furniture and stoneware, or hang it with other Irish and Scottish landscapes on a gallery wall. It would make a meaningful gift for anyone with a connection to County Down, the Mournes or Tollymore Forest.
