This is a lovely piece of handmade studio pottery, a rounded twin handled vase thrown on the wheel and finished by hand. Everything about it speaks of the maker, the softly uneven walls, the two pulled handles set a touch differently to each other, and the generous belly that narrows to a straight neck. It has all the honest, slightly wobbly charm that makes studio ceramics so collected, the feeling of a real person at the wheel rather than a mould.
The glaze is where it comes alive. A mossy olive green runs and pools down the body, breaking lighter over the raised curves and darker in the hollows, scattered with painterly dabs of deep cobalt blue that catch the eye. No two areas are the same and the way the glaze has moved in the kiln is part of the beauty. It measures 16 x 14 x 10 cm, a satisfying size that has real presence on a shelf without dominating.
We would style it as a vase for a loose armful of dried grasses, seed heads or a few stems of eucalyptus, where the organic glaze and natural foliage play off each other beautifully. It is just as happy empty, treated as a small sculpture on a stack of books, a windowsill or a mantel. The earthy palette sits well with wood, linen and other handmade ceramics, and it would slot straight into a collection of studio pieces.
There is light wear in keeping with age, and the base carries the honest, unglazed foot you expect from a thrown piece. Nothing detracts from its character or its display.
A characterful one of a kind studio vase, ready to bring a little handmade soul to your shelves.
