A handmade stoneware tazza, the footed bowl that has graced tables since the Renaissance, thrown by a studio potter and glazed in soft grey green with pools of pale sky blue. The rim is cut with four notches, and from each one the blue glaze runs inward like a little stream, settling in the bowl in shapes that look different every time you glance at it. A band of carved arches circles the outside, and the whole bowl rises on a sturdy blue pedestal foot with an unglazed rim showing the pale clay beneath.
Studio pottery is all about the maker’s hand, and you can see it here in the throwing lines, the speckled glaze and the way the colours have moved in the kiln. No two pieces come out alike, which is exactly what makes them such a pleasure to live with.
It measures 19 x 8.5 cm, a generous size for a pile of clementines, a few lemons on the kitchen table or a scattering of walnuts at Christmas. The raised foot gives even simple things a sense of occasion. It works beautifully on a hall table as a home for keys, on a dressing table for jewellery, or in the bathroom holding soaps and a sprig of eucalyptus. Pair it with green glass bottles, dried hydrangeas and pale linen, as we have here, or set it among blue and white china and stoneware jugs for a relaxed coastal look.
It is in good condition, with light marks from use. Please look through all the photographs, which form part of the description.
A tazza makes a lovely gift for a new home, a wedding or anyone who appreciates handmade things, and it’s a piece that will be used and admired for years. Browse our ceramics collection for more studio pottery to keep it company.
