Vintage Studio Pottery Stoneware Planter in Oatmeal with Carved Ochre Scrolls

This planter rewards close looking. From across the room it reads as a plain oatmeal stoneware cylinder. Up close, the surface is speckled with iron flecks, the walls carry the faint spiral of the potter's throwing rings, and a band of scrolling foliage has been carved into the clay and filled with a warm ochre glaze so that it sits slightly below the surface, like an engraving.

The technique is sgraffito, where the potter scratches through the top layer of slip or glaze to reveal the clay beneath. Here the scrolls have a loose, almost calligraphic energy, and no two repeats around the pot are quite the same. Two incised lines above and below frame the design. On the side near the base is an impressed circular seal, which we read as the initials P S or R S, though we have not been able to place the potter. It has the look of British studio work from the 1970s, when hand thrown planters were sold at craft fairs and potteries up and down the country.

It measures 14 cm tall and 15 cm across the rim, a good size for a maidenhair fern, a trailing string of hearts or a small pilea. There is no drainage hole, so it works best as a cachepot with the plant left in its plastic liner, or as a holder for wooden spoons and whisks on a kitchen worktop. We have also used pots like this for pens on a desk, where the warm colour softens all the black plastic around it.

Condition is very good. The glaze is intact with no crazing, and the only marks are a few small dark specks in the clay that are part of the firing rather than damage. The interior shows light use.

It would sit well beside a Denby or Hornsea piece from the same era, or on a windowsill next to green glass, where the ochre scrolls pick up the light.
