This Williamsburg Pottery Factory stoneware jug is a beautifully made reproduction of an 18th century antique from the collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Inspired by historic Rhenish stoneware, it reflects the kind of robust ceramic ware once exported from the Rhineland to colonial America, where Westerwald and Flanders potters supplied taverns, homes and merchants with sturdy mugs, jugs and jars.
The jug has a classic salt glaze finish, giving the surface a subtle sheen and slightly textured character. The cream stoneware body is decorated in rich cobalt blue using the traditional scratch blue technique, where pigment is worked into incised motifs. The floral and scrolling decoration has a lovely sense of movement, while the tall form, shaped handle and dark blue rim give the piece strong decorative presence.
Measuring 23 cm high and 15 cm wide, it is a useful size for styling as a vase with dried grasses, wheat, seed heads or simple stems. It would look beautiful on open kitchen shelving, a rustic dresser, a farmhouse table or a mantelpiece, especially alongside blue and white ceramics, pewter, vintage books or natural textures. It has a wonderful early American, folk pottery and country house feel, while still working beautifully in modern vintage interiors.
The jug comes with its original Williamsburg Pottery Factory certificate, adding provenance and dating the piece as a reproduction inspired by an 18th century original. It is in good vintage condition with light age related wear and handmade variation in the glaze and decoration, all in keeping with its character.
