A one of a kind studio pottery dish, hand thrown and then hand painted with real energy and wit. The deep teal glaze pools and breaks around the rim, and across the centre a tangle of lizards runs freehand in yellow, orange, and green, painted so no two areas repeat. At the heart sits a raised black well holding a small modelled lizard in bright yellow, a detail that gives the whole piece its charm.
There is real sculptural fun here too. Two of the feet are formed as pale paws, and a creature in black and white curls around one side of the rim, part cat, part something invented. Turn it over and the maker has pressed on paw prints and a spiral, then inscribed it by hand: To Moira from Angus. It began life as a gift, and that small dedication gives it a story most pottery does not carry.
It measures 30 x 5 cm, a proper statement size. We would stand it on a dresser or shelf where the painting can be read, hang it on a wall as a piece of art, or lay it flat as a centrepiece for fruit or a landing spot for keys and odds and ends by the door. It is a piece that starts conversations.
Condition is good, with the honest surface variation of handmade studio ware rather than a factory finish. We would keep it as a decorative and display piece and wash it gently by hand.
This suits anyone who loves colour, character, and pottery with a sense of humour, and it would make a memorable gift for a collector of studio ceramics or a lover of the unusual.
