Staffordshire flatbacks are among the most characterful ornaments the Victorians made, and this clock group is a charming example. Produced across the Staffordshire Potteries between roughly 1840 and 1900, figures like this were pressed with a flat, undecorated back so they could sit neatly against a wall on a cottage mantelpiece. This one shows a young girl in a full blue dress and bonnet, standing on a stack of books with a black and white spaniel at her side and a bright parrot perched in the grapevine above. At its centre sits a moulded clock face, the hands fixed and purely decorative, a whimsical touch typical of the potters of the day.

We love the naive charm of it. The scene is hand painted in rich cobalt blue, warm orange, yellow and green with touches of gilt, the colours still fresh and full of life. At 20 x 10 x 5 cm it has real presence without dominating a shelf, and the flat back means it tucks happily against a wall.

Condition is good for its age, with light crazing a hairline small crack at the back and gentle wear in keeping with a piece close to a century and a half old, all shown closely in the photographs. These honest signs of age are part of its story rather than a fault.
