Victorian Staffordshire Figure of a Reclining Man Reading on a Chaise

A Victorian Staffordshire figure of a man reclining on a chaise longue, book in hand and lost in the page. The scrolled sofa is painted in warm orange and deep russet with a ruched cushion, while the figure wears a flowing white robe scattered with pink floral sprigs and a blue sash at the collar. It is a gentle, domestic scene, the kind of quiet moment the Staffordshire potters loved to capture, and it makes an unusual change from the standing figures and animals more commonly found.

The piece measures 20 x 22 x 7 cm, wider than it is tall, so it sits low and settled on a shelf or mantel. The modelling of the chaise is particularly good, from the curl of the scrolled arm to the fringed valance along the base, and the hand painting is lively throughout, the roses picked out one by one and the hair rendered in glossy black.
