A pair of pressed glass candlesticks in a soft powder blue, with a faceted column, a band of diamond cut detail at the neck, and a stepped square base that catches the light from every side. The geometric, tiered lines have a real Art Deco feel, and the gentle blue tint keeps them light and pretty rather than heavy.

Pressed glass was made by pressing molten glass into moulds, which let glassworks produce crisp, decorative pieces like these in quantity from the 19th century onwards, with bold geometric shapes coming to the fore in the 1920s and 1930s. A soft colour like this was popular for dressing table and mantel pieces.

They measure 16 x 12.5 cm and are sold as a pair, sized for standard dinner candles. We would set them on a mantel or dinner table where a matching pair does its best work, stand them on a dresser or windowsill to catch the light, or use them to bring a little colour to a neutral scheme. The soft blue sits beautifully with white, cream, and blue and white china.

Condition is good, with the light wear you would expect from vintage glass. As with all pressed glass, small manufacturing marks under the base are part of how they were made.

A pair like this suits lovers of vintage and Art Deco glass, anyone laying a pretty table, and collectors of blue glass. They would make a lovely gift or wedding present, and pairs are always harder to find than singles.
