This vibrant set of six mid-20th century coloured glass beakers was produced by the Verrerie de Boussu, the historic glassworks in the Belgian town of the same name. Each beaker measures 9.5 x 6 cm, and the group includes a spectrum of colours: ruby red, amber yellow, emerald green, cobalt blue, violet and smoky brown. The green beaker still carries its original Boussu label, a rare survival that adds authenticity and collectable interest.
The Boussu glassworks was founded in 1847 and became one of Belgium’s leading producers of pressed and blown glassware. Known for its bold use of colour, Boussu created ranges that were both functional and decorative, reflecting the mid-20th century shift towards modern living and expressive design. The factory ceased production in the 1970s, which means every surviving set now represents not just a practical piece of tableware but also a fragment of Belgian design history.
These beakers embody the practical elegance of the period. Their clean, cylindrical forms are easy to hold, while their colour-blocked design adds a touch of playfulness. Because they are vintage, each glass carries slight variations in tone and finish, setting them apart from today’s uniform, mass-produced glassware. The presence of the original factory label on one glass is especially appealing, underscoring their provenance and making them more desirable to collectors.
Styling options are plentiful. These glasses are perfectly sized for water, fruit juices or cocktails, and their colours bring immediate vibrancy to the table. They work equally well for everyday dining and for entertaining, their cheerful hues catching the light beautifully. When displayed on open shelving or a bar tray, the rainbow effect becomes a decorative feature in its own right. They pair easily with clear glass, simple ceramics or even cut crystal to create layered and characterful table settings.
Coordinated sets like this are increasingly scarce, particularly when accompanied by an original label. They capture a moment in European design history when colour and practicality came together, and they continue to feel fresh and stylish today. Whether used, displayed or gifted, these beakers carry the enduring legacy of one of Belgium’s great glass factories.
