Hand Carved Cameo Helmet Shell with Classical Female Profile

Shell carving is one of the oldest decorative crafts still practised, and this piece shows why it has lasted. A large helmet shell has been worked by hand so that a classical female profile stands out in pale relief against the deeper pink and brown beneath, her hair bound and drawn up in the manner of a Roman portrait. The technique relies on the natural layers within the shell itself, the carver cutting down through the pale outer surface to reveal the darker ground behind, which is what gives a cameo its depth and its glow.

The shell keeps its own architecture, a knobbed spiral apex at one end and a wide flared lip in glossy cream and apricot at the other, banded and mottled across the back.
