Large Abalone Shell in Iridescent Green and Silver

Nothing manufactured quite matches the colour of an abalone shell. The interior is lined with nacre, the same material that forms a pearl, laid down in fine layers that split the light and throw back greens, silvers, blues and soft pinks depending on where you stand. This one has an especially good surface, deep and liquid looking, with the swirls and ripples of its growth visible across the bowl. The outer side keeps its natural cream and pink texture, a lovely contrast to the shine within.

We love the scale of it. At 20 x 15 x 8 cm this is well above the size most abalone shells reach in the shops, a proper oval bowl rather than a small dish, generous enough to hold keys by a front door, fruit on a kitchen counter, or nothing at all beyond its own reflection. Abalone are slow growing, so a shell this large represents many years of life on the seabed.

Condition is very good, with a bright interior surface and a clean shape, all shown closely in the photographs. Natural ridges, ripples and variations in colour are part of the shell's own growth and give each one its individual character.

Style it where the light can reach it, since the colour only really performs when it catches a window or a lamp. It looks striking on a hall table, on a bathroom shelf, or resting on a stack of books, and it sits beautifully alongside coral, glass and pale ceramics. The cool greens and silvers work particularly well in a room with blues and teals, though the shell is dramatic enough to hold its own against a dark, saturated wall.
