Eight pretty pink glass coupes, ready for ice cream, trifle and every pudding in between. Each one has a wide, conical bowl pressed with a starburst pattern of fans and diamonds, a beaded band just below the rim and a little ribbed pedestal foot that catches the light beautifully. The colour is a soft blush, somewhere between rose and peach, and it glows when the sun comes through it.

Coloured pressed glass was the great affordable luxury of the 20th century. Moulding glass by machine meant patterns that once needed a skilled cutter could appear on every kitchen dresser, and pink was the colour everyone wanted, from the Depression glass of 1930s America to the British dessert sets of the postwar years. Sets of eight have often lost a member or two over the decades, so finding a full matching set together is a happy thing.

Each coupe measures 8 x 10 cm, a generous single serving that is still dainty enough to feel like a treat. They are in good vintage condition, with the light surface wear you would expect from glass that has seen many Sunday lunches.

We would serve homemade ice cream in them with a wafer tucked in the side, or layer up raspberries, cream and crushed meringue for an easy Eton mess. They are perfect for possets, chocolate mousse and syllabub, and come into their own at Christmas for a retro prawn cocktail starter, the 1970s dinner party classic that never really went away. Away from the table, use one as a small vase for a posy of sweet peas or garden roses, fill a few with tealights for a summer evening, or keep one on a dressing table for rings and earrings. Lined up on an open shelf, all eight make a cheerful display of colour, and they look lovely alongside other pink glass, gold rimmed china and pastel linen.
