Vintage Marine Oil Painting of a Tall Ship in Turquoise Seas, Signed L. Papaluca

Small in size and generous in detail, this signed marine oil painting shows a three masted barquentine under full sail. Her pale grey hull cuts through a turquoise sea while a second tall ship keeps pace on the far horizon. It is signed L. Papaluca to the lower right, a name associated with Naples and its long tradition of ship portraiture, in which painters produced likenesses of yachts and sailing vessels for captains, owners and crews. We have not been able to verify the signature, so we offer the painting on its own merits, as a beautifully detailed maritime scene, rather than as a confirmed work by a particular artist.

Lean in close and the painting rewards you. Tiny crew members stand along the bow rail, and the anchor chain loops beneath the bowsprit. Each line of rigging is picked out against the sky, and the sails glow a warm apricot where the light catches them. The sea is painted with real energy, all rolling swell and white crests in shades of teal, jade and deep blue, with a soft peach sky above.

The painting measures 30 x 24 cm in its wooden frame and is ready to hang. A fine network of craquelure runs across the canvas, which we think only adds to its character and speaks to its age. There are signs of historic woodworm to the rear of the frame, not visible from the front.

Its modest scale makes it ideal for places where a large seascape would overwhelm. Lean it on a bathroom shelf with a few shells, prop it on a mantelpiece beside blue and white china, or hang it in a hallway gallery wall alongside botanical prints and old family photographs. It looks equally at home in a coastal cottage or a city flat in need of a sea view. It would make a lovely gift for anyone who sails, or simply wishes they did. It has the added bonus of no mooring fees!
