Framed Antique Victorian Cookery Illustration of Rose Meringue

This framed antique colour illustration has all the theatrical charm of a Victorian dessert table. Taken from Cassell’s New Universal Cookery Book by Lizzie Heritage, first published in 1896, it shows Rose Meringue, a tall mound of pale cream meringue crowned with pink rose decoration and presented on a serving plate with green leaves.

The image is wonderfully decorative, with soft whites, blush pinks, leafy greens and warm table tones creating a pretty and slightly playful piece of wall art. Rose flavoured sweets and floral decoration were much loved in Victorian cookery, and this illustration captures that taste for puddings that were designed to delight the eye as much as the appetite.

This original 1896 plate has been carefully removed from a first edition copy for framing, so the print itself is genuinely Victorian and over 125 years old. The soft mustard mount and simple wooden frame give it a fresh decorative finish, ready to hang or display.

It would be especially lovely in a kitchen, dining room, pantry, breakfast nook or café style corner, where the soft pink and mustard tones can add warmth and character.
