A striking mid-century abstract painting titled Rock Pools, St Ives, signed “Shields” and dated 1978. Executed in watercolour and gouache on paper, the composition blends layered washes of blue, teal and soft yellow with expressive brushwork that evokes the rhythm and texture of tidal rock pools. Both fluid and structured, this piece captures a sense of place while still feeling entirely modern.
Presented in its original gilt frame with a soft peach mount, the painting has been preserved behind glass. A small speck of dried gold pigment has fallen from the frame and now rests between the mount and the glass - this is clearly shown in the photographs and does not affect the artwork itself.
This piece would complement a coastal interior beautifully, whether in a relaxed seaside retreat or a modern home inspired by natural elements and watery tones. With its 1970s origin and timeless abstraction, it also works well in mid-century settings or clean-lined contemporary spaces. Style alongside soft linens, natural textures or minimalist furniture to let the colours sing.
