Vintage 1980's Portmeirion Parian Ware Jug in Matt White Pilgrim Family Design

Portmeirion revived one of the oldest traditions in Staffordshire pottery when it launched the British Heritage Collection in 1984, and this jug is a lovely example of it. Working from original 19th century Kirkham's moulds, Portmeirion reproduced the matt Parian bisque that Victorian potters used to imitate white marble, a surface that holds fine modelling far better than a thick glaze ever could. The result looks and feels antique while being altogether more practical on a modern shelf.

The relief here is the Pilgrim Family scene, a group of travellers gathered beneath trees and drapery, modelled in high relief across both sides of the jug. The twisting branch handle and scrolling leafwork around the rim complete the sculptural effect. In plain matt white it reads calm and almost architectural, which is exactly why these jugs settle so happily into a pared back interior.

It stands 22cm tall and measures 20cm from spout to handle, so it has real presence rather than being a token mantel piece. Fill it with dried hydrangea or bare branches for a sculptural moment, group it with other white ceramics for a tonal shelf, or let it stand alone as an object in its own right. The matt surface has kept its crisp detail and the piece displays beautifully.
