Pair of Antique Brass Candlesticks with Stepped Bases

A pair beats a single every time on a mantelpiece, and this one has real elegance in the line. Each stick rises through a turned baluster stem with a rounded knop at its centre, narrowing to a deep sconce that holds a taper securely, then spreading out to a faceted, stepped base that gives the whole thing stability and presence. The brass has warmed to a soft golden tone with darker notes in the recesses, the patina that only comes from decades of handling and polishing.

We love the height of them. At 24.5 x 9 cm they stand tall enough to matter on a dining table without blocking the view across it, and the two together create the symmetry that makes a mantel look properly considered. Matched antique pairs are considerably harder to find than singles, since candlesticks get separated over the years, so buying two that have stayed together is worth something.

Condition is good, with an even patina and gentle wear across both, all shown closely in the photographs. Brass develops its own character over time, and these have done so beautifully. A quick polish will bring them up brighter if you prefer more shine.

Style them at either end of a mantelpiece, flanking a mirror or a painting, or down the centre of a dining table with tapers in a strong colour. They look wonderful with coral or pink candles against the gold, and they mix happily with vintage glass, ceramics and other brass for a collected look. Candlelight is the most flattering light there is, and a good pair of sticks is the simplest way to get more of it.
