A goose with somewhere to be. This naive folk art painting has all the charm of the American country style that swept through farmhouse kitchens in the 1980s and 90s, with a plump pink goose striding across a meadow past a little red roofed cottage, a picket fence and rolling green hills. The whole surface has been given a crackle glaze finish, that fine web of craquelure that makes a new painting look as though it has hung above someone's range for a century. It is a decorative technique rather than genuine age, and it works beautifully here, softening the colours to a gentle palette of butter yellow, sage and pale rose.

The painting is worked in oils on board and sits in its original wooden frame, painted a deep bottle green with the kind of soft wear to the edges that suits the piece perfectly. The frame measures 63 x 49 cm overall, and the painting is wired and ready to hang the moment it arrives. The board and frame are both sound, with the crackle finish consistent across the surface as intended.

Naive art of this kind has a long history, from the untrained itinerant painters of 19th century New England to the folk revival that followed, and this goose belongs firmly to that lineage. It is unsigned, which is common for decorative pieces of this period, and the appeal lies in the composition rather than a name.
