Polishing is what turns an ordinary sea shell into something like this. Beneath the dull outer layer lies nacre, the same material that lines an oyster and gives a pearl its glow, and once the surface is worked back that iridescence is revealed in full. Here the whole shell shimmers in soft pinks, creams and golds with flashes of green, the colour shifting as you turn it or as the light moves across the room.
We love the geometry of it. The spiral winds tight to a small point at the centre and opens out across a broad, rounded body, the kind of natural curve that has fascinated mathematicians and artists for centuries. At 12.5 x 9 cm it has real presence, substantial enough to hold a shelf on its own rather than needing a group around it, and it feels wonderful in the hand.
Condition is very good, with a bright, glossy surface and the spiral intact, all shown closely in the photographs. Small variations in colour and marking belong to the shell itself and are part of what makes each one different.
A shell like this works far beyond a coastal scheme. Set it on a stack of books, place it on a mantelpiece where it can catch the light, or gather it with coral and other natural specimens for a cabinet of curiosities. The pale iridescence lifts a dark, layered room beautifully and brings softness to a pared back one. It also makes an excellent thing to hand to a small person who wants to hold something precious, which is arguably the highest purpose an object can serve.
