Modernist Still Life Oil Painting with Plaster Mask after Fernand Léger

This original oil on canvas laid on board is a striking still life after Fernand Léger, with bold blocks of colour, strong black outlines and a confident modernist composition. The arrangement includes a coffee pot, a plaster mask in profile, a black wheel form and geometric shapes in red, ochre, cream, pale blue and deep black.

Height: 65cm (25.6in)
Width: 55cm (21.7in)
Measured including the frame

The painting draws on the visual language associated with Léger, the celebrated French modernist painter, particularly in its use of simplified forms, graphic contrast and mechanical shapes. The plaster mask adds a classical note within the composition, while the wheel and angular forms give the painting a strong sense of structure and movement.

Presented in a beautifully aged pale blue painted wooden frame with distressed character, the piece measures 65 x 55 cm overall including the frame. The cool blue frame works beautifully with the warmer tones of the painting, giving the artwork a distinctive decorative presence.

This would make a strong focal point above a fireplace, console table, sideboard, desk or library wall. It would also work beautifully as part of a layered gallery wall, especially alongside other modernist inspired artworks, studio pottery, vintage glass, old books and sculptural objects. The bold palette gives it impact in contemporary interiors, while the aged frame brings texture and character to more eclectic vintage spaces.

The painting is in good vintage condition with signs of age to the frame and painted surface, all in keeping with an original artwork of this kind. A bold and decorative still life with strong modernist influence, confident colour and excellent interior styling appeal.
