This vibrant set of six mid-20th century coloured glass tumblers was produced by the historic glassworks in the Belgian town of Boussu. Each tumbler measures 12 x 6 cm and the group includes a striking rainbow of colours: emerald green, amber yellow, ruby red, violet, cobalt blue and smoky brown. Together they form a coordinated yet playful set that brings instant character to the table.

The Verrerie de Boussu was founded in 1847 and became one of Belgium’s most important glass factories, producing both pressed and blown glassware for over a century. The factory was especially admired for its colourful ranges, which were practical for everyday use while also decorative in their bold palettes. Production finally ceased in the 1970s, meaning that every Boussu piece now holds historic interest as well as collectable value.

These tumblers embody the spirit of mid-20th century European design, when glassmakers embraced bright colour and practical forms to suit modern living. Their clean cylindrical lines make them comfortable to hold, while the colour blocks give a sense of playfulness. Because they are vintage, no two sets are quite the same. Subtle variations in tone and thickness set them apart from today’s uniform, mass-produced glassware.

Styling possibilities are abundant. These tumblers are generous enough for water, cocktails or soft drinks, and their durability makes them ideal for both daily use and entertaining. On a dining table, the rainbow tones add joy and vibrancy. On a bar tray or drinks trolley they create a striking display even when empty. They work particularly well in contrast with clear crystal or plain ceramics, allowing the colour to stand out, and they can also be mixed with other midcentury glassware for a layered look.

A coordinated set of six in different colours is increasingly hard to find, which adds to their appeal. They represent a piece of Belgian glassmaking history as well as a stylish and practical choice for the home. Whether used for serving drinks, displayed as part of a collection, or given as a thoughtful gift, these tumblers carry the legacy of a historic glassworks that defined Belgian midcentury style.
