We love a painting that tells you exactly where you are, and this one does it on the destination blind. A red double decker tram, route 33, rounds the bend towards Islington Green under a pale sky, its overhead wires crisscrossing above the rooftops and its tracks curving away through a street washed in warm apricot light.
Painted in oil on canvas board by David Harvey, signed and dated 1989 in the lower left corner, it looks back at a London that had vanished decades earlier. The capital's last trams ran in 1952, and route 33 was among the final services to go, so this is a scene recreated with real affection, most likely from old photographs.
The brushwork is loose and confident. Look closely and you'll find the green lamp post with its curled bracket, a row of tall terraces in soft plum and brown, chimney pots catching the light, and the fleet number 170 on the front of the tram. The palette is lovely: pillar box red set against rose, lilac and sage, which makes it far easier to live with than many transport paintings.
It sits in a dark wood frame with a gilt inner slip and measures 45 x 35 cm including the frame, with hanging wire fitted to the back so it is ready to hang. The frame has a few light marks from age, and the board is held in place with small wooden wedges in the traditional way.
Hang it in a hallway or study alongside vintage maps and prints for a London gallery wall, or give it a wall of its own above a sideboard, where the red can pick up a lamp base or a stack of old books. It would make a lovely gift for anyone with Islington roots, a transport enthusiast, or a Londoner living elsewhere who misses home.
