A proper 1970s breakfast table classic, this Hornsea Heirloom butter dish brings warmth and pattern to the kitchen every morning. The rectangular base and lid are glazed in a rich, glossy treacle brown, and the sides carry Heirloom's famous band of linked ovals and diamonds, raised in dark chocolate against glowing amber. A neat square knob sits on top of the lid, and the base is marked Hornsea Heirloom underneath.
Heirloom was designed by John Clappison for Hornsea Pottery in Yorkshire and launched in 1967. It became one of the bestselling British tableware ranges of its time, and for many of us it is the pattern of a grandparent's kitchen, sitting on the table next to the teapot and the toast rack. Today it is collected for its bold geometric design and its very sturdy, practical stoneware, which was made for daily use and still copes with it beautifully.
The dish measures 15 x 9 x 9 cm to the top of the lid and takes a standard block of butter. The glaze is glossy and the pattern is crisp, with only light signs of use, as you would expect from a piece that has seen a few decades of breakfasts.
It looks wonderful on an open shelf with other brown and amber pieces, with copper pans or wooden boards, or among cream and white ironstone for contrast. If you already have Heirloom mugs or a coffee pot, this makes a satisfying addition to the set, and it is a lovely present for anyone who grew up with the pattern and gets nostalgic at the sight of it. It also makes a smart storage pot for tea bags, sugar cubes or keys by the door, although butter is its true calling.
