This is a charming piece of vintage Irish pottery with a story worth telling. The base is stamped Made in St Michael's House Dublin, Design from Book of Kells, and the embossed interlacing around the body is drawn straight from that famous ninth century illuminated manuscript, the intricate Celtic knotwork Ireland is known the world over for. St Michael's House is a long running Dublin organisation, and pieces from its pottery workshops have become collectable in their own right, real craft with real heritage behind it.

The glaze is a deep teal green that pools darker in the recesses of the design and lifts to a brighter jade on the raised lines, so the jug shifts beautifully as you turn it in the light. The shape is round and generous with a neat pouring lip and a chunky ribbed handle. It measures 10 x 12 cm, a friendly size that pours as a milk or cream jug at the table and does just as well as a small vase.

We love how a jug like this works in a room. Fill it with milk for afternoon tea, gather a posy of garden flowers or herbs, or stand it on a desk for pens and brushes. On a dresser or open shelf the rich colour sings against paler pottery and white walls, and the Book of Kells detailing rewards a closer look. It is a natural talking point for anyone with a soft spot for Ireland.
