A wonderfully characterful piece of French Quimper faience, this vintage butter dish comes with its matching ceramic handled knife and that classic hand painted Breton figure at the centre. It is exactly the sort of detail that lifts a table setting, whether you are laying breakfast for the weekend or building a joyful, collected look on open shelving.
Quimper pottery has been made in Brittany for centuries and is loved for its lively brushwork, rich cobalt borders, and folk motifs. Here, the leaf shaped dish is finished with a bold blue rim and a central figure, with the knife echoing the same palette. It is practical too, giving you a dedicated spot for butter or soft cheese, with the knife sitting neatly alongside when not in use.
Style it on a breakfast tray with linen napkins and a stack of vintage plates, or use it as a small serving piece for pâté, tapenade, or a little salt on the counter. It also looks brilliant left out as part of a kitchen vignette with other French ceramics and blue and white pieces.
Dish measures 14 x 8.5 cm. Knife measures 11.5 cm. Ceramic faience, hand painted. Marked to the underside Henriot Quimper France. Good vintage condition with light surface wear consistent with age, and signs of use to the knife as you would expect.
