Vintage Shop Sign Letter F in Gold and Red with Serif Detail

A striking serif letter F, rescued from an old shop sign, with a gold painted wooden face and a bright red metal return wrapping around its edges. The crisp serifs at the top and on the crossbar give it a classic signwriter’s elegance, while the red sides throw a warm glow of colour whenever you look at it from an angle.

Before plastic lightboxes and printed panels took over, shop names were built letter by letter, each piece fixed separately to the fascia so the name stood out in proud relief. Letters like this one would once have announced a family business to the whole street, and as old signs were taken down over the decades, many were lost for good. This F shows the gentle wear of its working years, with a softly rubbed and lightly crazed gold face, small marks to the red, and its original fixing plate still in place on the back.

It measures 31 x 23 x 2 cm, a lovely size to prop on a shelf or mantelpiece or to hang in a hallway, kitchen or study.

We also have the matching O and N from the same sign, so you can start building a word of your own or combine them with other reclaimed letters for names and initials. On its own, it makes a characterful gift for a Florence, Felix or Freya, a nod to family or food in a kitchen, or a bold accent in a child’s bedroom. The gold and red sit beautifully against dark painted walls, exposed brick or soft plaster tones, and look equally at home in a modern flat or a country cottage.
