Here is a whole Sunday afternoon in four small books: a stroll under the trees, a look round the village church, a trip to the zoo and an eye for the buildings on the way home. These vintage Observer's Pocket Books come in leaf green, cherry red, charcoal and marmalade orange, and the series numbers at the foot of each spine add a neat finishing detail.
Trees is one of the oldest subjects in the series, first published before the war as Trees and Shrubs of the British Isles. Architecture began life in 1951 as British Architecture and became a long running favourite for anyone who wanted to tell a Norman arch from a Gothic one. Old English Churches guides you through towers, fonts, screens and stained glass, a perfect companion for exploring a country churchyard, while Zoo Animals, added in 1972, brings in the lions, giraffes and penguins.
Each book measures roughly 14.5 x 9.5cm (5.75 x 3.75 inches). The deep red and charcoal give this set a slightly more traditional look, so it sits well on a hall table beside a brass bowl or a stack of old maps, or on a study shelf with dark wood and leather. For a church crawler, a history lover or a grandparent who still remembers every zoo trip, it makes an easy and personal gift.
All four are hardbacks in their original boards and come without dust jackets. They show light rubbing to corners and edges and some gentle fading, with clean, readable pages throughout. The photos show them clearly, so please take a good look.
Fresh air, old stone and a penguin or two: a very good way to fill a shelf.
