1970s Britvic Pineapple Ice Bucket in Yellow and Green

Nothing says a 1970s drinks trolley like a pineapple ice bucket, and this is the one everybody wanted: the Britvic Fruit Juices promotional version, complete with its little enamelled plaque on the front. Britvic gave these to pubs and hotel bars in the 1970s to sit next to the mixers, and the ones that survived went home in handbags and ended up on sideboards across the country. Fifty years on it is still funny, still useful and still slightly ridiculous, which is exactly why we like it.

It is moulded plastic, textured and painted to look convincingly like a real pineapple, with a leafy green crown that lifts off as the lid. Inside is a white insulated liner that keeps ice cold for a good couple of hours, and the whole thing measures 17 cm across and 23 cm tall with the lid on, so it takes up no more room than a large jug. The paintwork has that warm, slightly aged orange yellow that the plastic goes to over time, and the plaque is clear and intact. There is light wear to the surface in places and a few tiny scuffs to the leaves, all of which we think adds to it.

We would put it straight on a bar cart or drinks trolley with a bottle of something and two glasses, or use it on the kitchen counter as a home for tea bags, lollipops or the dog's treats. It makes a brilliant plant pot for a small trailing plant, lid off, and it is also one of those objects that ends up on a bookshelf with nothing in it at all, simply because it looks pleased with itself. For a kitsch cocktail party or a tiki themed evening it is the obvious centrepiece.
