Handmade fused glass in clear and cobalt, this rectangular serving dish carries a scatter of blue rings and bubbles across its base, so the light catches it differently from every angle. Fused glass is made by layering pieces of coloured glass and firing them in a kiln until they melt together, a craft that predates glassblowing and reaches back to ancient Egypt and Rome. Every piece comes out a little its own, and this one has a watery, ink in water quality that keeps drawing the eye.
It measures 24 x 12 cm, a generous size for a table without taking over. We would reach for it as an olive or nibbles dish at a dinner party, a landing spot for crisps and dips, or somewhere by the front door to catch keys and coins. Left empty on a shelf it reads as a small piece of art glass in its own right, and it looks lovely against pale walls, warm wood, or a shelf of blue and white china.
The blue and clear palette makes it an easy companion for a coastal kitchen, a Delft inspired scheme, or a pared back modern table that wants one handmade thing among the plain white. Set it with linen napkins and a little greenery and it pulls a table together with almost no effort.
Condition is good, with the gentle surface character you would expect from kiln formed glass rather than factory production. We would wash it by hand and keep it out of the dishwasher to protect the finish and colour.
A piece like this suits anyone who loves colour and texture, and it would make a thoughtful gift for a keen host or a lover of blue and white.
