A handsome pair of vintage books from the four volume series Our Wonderful World, edited by Sir John Alexander Hammerton and published by The Amalgamated Press, London, in the 1930s. Hammerton was described in the Dictionary of National Biography as the most successful creator of large-scale works of reference that Britain has known, with credits including Harmsworth's Universal Encyclopaedia and Wonders of the Past. This pair comprises Volumes III and IV from the set, bound in warm mustard cloth with gilt lettering and decorative bands in deep blue on the spines and covers. Measuring 29 by 22 by 6 cm as the bundled pair, the books are sold styled together with a tartan ribbon. The cloth binding, gilt detail, and substantial proportions make this an ideal pair for styling on a layered bookshelf, coffee table, or sideboard arrangement. The warm tones of the binding sit beautifully alongside other vintage hardbacks, dried botanicals, antique brass, and curated objects, bringing real visual weight and a sense of accumulated time to a room.
