A characterful set of 4 small Ridgways stoneware tankard mugs from the Coaching Days and Coaching Ways series, finished in that rich amber brown glaze with crisp black transfer scenes. They have a lovely old pub feel and look brilliant styled on open kitchen shelves, in a glazed cupboard, or brought out for weekend coffees when you want something with a bit more story than an everyday mug.

A collector detail worth knowing: Ridgways chose these scenes from the 1888 book Coaching Days and Coaching Ways by W Outram Tristram, using illustrations by Hugh Thomson and Herbert Railton, and the series is widely dated to the 1890s through to the 1920s, often with Macmillan and Co Ltd referenced as the publisher.

Each mug measures 10 cm high and 10.5 cm across to the handle. Sold as a set of 4. As antique stoneware, expect age related signs of use such as gentle surface wear, which suits the look and the history of the set.
