Framed Antique Victorian Cookery Illustration of Raised Pigeon Pie

This framed antique colour illustration captures one of the great showpiece dishes of the Victorian kitchen. Taken from Cassell’s New Universal Cookery Book by Lizzie Heritage, first published in 1896, it shows Raised Pigeon Pie, a tall hand raised pastry pie with a crimped golden crust, decorative garnish and colourful vegetable detail, presented on a footed serving plate.

Raised pies were an impressive part of Victorian cookery, valued for both flavour and structure. The pastry case had to be formed with care so that it could stand proudly on the plate, then filled with game, poultry or pigeon and finished with savoury jelly as it cooled. In this illustration, the pie has a wonderfully architectural quality, with its fluted sides, rich golden colour and bright garnish giving it real table presence.

This original 1896 plate has been carefully removed from a first edition copy for framing, so the print itself is genuinely Victorian and over 125 years old. The paper tone, colour and gentle age all add to its historical character.

Presented in a soft mustard mount within a simple wooden frame, it is ready to hang or display. It would look excellent in a kitchen, dining room, pantry, breakfast nook or country house style interior, especially alongside antique kitchenware, vintage cookery books, copper pans, botanical prints or other framed Victorian food illustrations.

The framed print is in good antique and vintage condition, with light signs of age to the paper, frame and backing, all in keeping with its history and character.
