Framed Antique Victorian Cookery Illustration of Fruit Compote à la Genoese

This framed antique colour illustration brings a wonderfully decorative piece of Victorian cookery history to the wall. Taken from Cassell’s New Universal Cookery Book by Lizzie Heritage, first published in 1896, it shows Fruit Compote à la Genoese, a tall layered dessert in soft green, lilac and cream tones, crowned with apricot or peach compote and set on a delicate footed serving plate.

There is something almost architectural about the dessert, with its striped layers, frilled cream border and carefully arranged fruit topping. It captures the Victorian love of presentation, where a pudding was expected to look as impressive as it tasted. The Genoese reference points to a style of Italian sponge cake associated with Genoa, often used in layered desserts with cream, jelly, fruit or preserves.

This original 1896 plate has been carefully removed  and framed with a soft mustard mount in a simple wooden frame. The print itself is genuinely Victorian and over 125 years old, with the colour, paper tone and gentle age you would expect from an illustration of this period.

It would be a lovely piece for a kitchen, dining room, pantry, breakfast nook or café style gallery wall. The warm mustard frame gives it a fresh decorative lift, while the subject brings charm, humour and a little culinary theatre to the room. It would sit beautifully with antique kitchenware, vintage cookery books, framed food prints, botanical illustrations or colourful vintage ceramics.

The framed print is in good antique and vintage condition, with light signs of age to the paper, frame and backing, all in keeping with its history and character.
