One of a kind
Three cream bunnies make their way across a strip of painted grass on this cheerful vintage hook rack: one sitting up and listening, one caught mid leap, and one crouched low as if about to bolt. Each wears a hand painted bow at the neck, in mint green, coral pink and powder blue, with fine pink lines tracing the inside of their ears. The grass is sponged in two greens over a pale ground and cut along the top into little tufts, while the bunnies are softly toned to warm biscuit at the edges, which gives the whole piece a gentle storybook feel.
It is cut from sheet metal and painted by hand in the toleware tradition of decorated tin, and a small label on the back reads Made in Haiti. Haiti is celebrated for its cut metal folk art, much of it made in the village of Croix des Bouquets near Port au Prince, and this piece shares that lively, hand cut character, finished here in soft nursery colours rather than left as bare dark steel.
It measures 39cm long and 20cm high, with the four black wire hooks standing 5cm out from the wall, and it weighs 0.36kg. Two holes in the grass make it simple to screw in place. Hung low in a nursery or child's bedroom it is just right for dressing gowns, school bags and little coats, and by the back door it will happily hold dog leads, a sun hat or a trug. Come spring it makes a sweet spot for Easter decorations too.
Condition is in keeping with age and use, with light rubbing and small marks to the paintwork, mostly around the edges. The hooks are welded firmly in place at the back.
A lovely gift for a new baby or a first big bedroom, and a happy thing to come home to every day. You can find more painted pieces in our Toleware & Painted Folk Art collection.
