1980s Irish Pub Scene Oil Painting in Red and Gilt Frame, Signed Eileen Connolly

Four men, a table of pints and one very serious conversation. This original oil on canvas pub scene was painted in 1983 and is signed Eileen Connolly to the lower right. Two old men in flat caps sit shoulder to shoulder, hands folded, listening while a third leans over the table to make his point. The fourth draws on his pipe with the look of a man who has heard it all before.

The setting is a traditional Irish pub, painted in rich oxblood reds and deep browns. There's a dark timber partition, a small paned window letting in pale daylight, and a scrubbed wooden table with pints of stout, an ashtray and a matchbox. The brushwork is loose and confident, and the artist has a real feel for faces and posture. The weathered features and the slump of tired shoulders are especially well observed, and there is plenty of warmth and humour in the scene.

The painting measures 35 x 31 cm and sits in a gilt frame with a red outer edge, which picks up the colour of the pub walls beautifully. The frame has a couple of small chips, in keeping with its age.

This is a painting with bags of atmosphere, and it would be perfectly at home in a kitchen, a cosy snug or above a home bar. Pair it with dark wood, brass, old green glass bottles and a stack of well thumbed books, or hang it among other small oils on a gallery wall. It makes a thoughtful gift for anyone with Irish roots or a soft spot for a proper old pub. It is also ideal for anyone who misses their local, or would simply like four regulars who never ask whose round it is.
