A pair of hand thrown studio pottery bowls in speckled stoneware, with a sandy oatmeal exterior left unglazed to show the raw clay and a soft pale grey glaze pooling inside. Each one carries the gentle throwing rings and little iron speckles that mark a piece made on the wheel by hand, and the two nest together beautifully.

Bowls like these belong to the studio pottery tradition, where a single maker throws, glazes, and fires each piece, so no two are ever quite identical. The pared back, earthy palette and calm wabi sabi feel owe a lot to the Japanese and Leach school influences that run through British studio ceramics. One bowl carries an impressed maker's seal to the base.

They measure 14 x 6.5 cm each and are sold as a pair. We would reach for them as snack, dip, or nibble bowls, for olives, nuts, and crisps at a gathering, or as everyday bowls for cereal, rice, or ice cream. Empty and nested on a shelf or dresser they read as a lovely bit of handmade texture against wood, linen, or white china.

Condition is good throughout, with the natural variation and character you would expect from handmade stoneware rather than factory production.

A pair like this suits lovers of handmade ceramics, followers of the wabi sabi and Japandi look, and anyone who likes a table set with pieces that were made rather than mass produced. They would also make a warm housewarming or wedding gift.
