Indian Benares Brass Lidded Jar with Finial and Engraved Floral Motifs

This Indian Benares brass jar is a beautifully rounded and richly detailed piece of traditional metalware. Measuring 15.5 centimetres in height and 13 centimetres across, it features a domed lid topped with a finely shaped finial and a bulbous form that tapers gently at the base.

The exterior is intricately engraved with scrolling floral and foliate motifs, creating a continuous decorative surface that speaks to the high level of craftsmanship associated with Benares brasswork. The finish has developed a warm patina over time, softening the brass and adding tonal depth to the engraved detail.

Inside, the jar has a worn silvered interior, where a once bright finish has gradually faded with age and use. The decorative patterning visible on the inner surface is the reverse impression of the exterior engraving, giving it an unusual layered appearance and a quiet sense of history. While the exact origin of the silvered layer is unclear, it contributes to the piece’s rich, timeworn character.
