This one is firmly in the second camp. He stands on his grassy mound with his ears forward and a look of mild suspicion, as if he has just caught someone eyeing up the last sausage.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe is solid cast iron, painted by hand in cream, with two greens for the grass and a black plinth beneath, its scroll panels lined in gold. He is hollow cast at the back, where a flat tab at the base slides under the door to hold it firm. He measures 11.5cm by 9.5cm by 6cm, a neat size for a cottage door, a pantry or a narrow hall.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePigs have been part of country life in Britain for centuries, and well into the twentieth century plenty of cottagers kept one in a sty at the bottom of the garden. They found their way indoors too, as pottery pigs on the dresser and cast iron ones by the door, and this one would look entirely at home in a farmhouse kitchen.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHis years show more than most. The cream has worn thin across his back and sides, letting little star shaped flecks of bare metal through, the gold on the plinth has faded in places, and there are chips along the plinth edges and around the rim of the hollow back. It gives him the air of a farmyard veteran, and to our eye he has all the more character for it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSet him on a kitchen windowsill, by the boot room door or on a shelf among old stoneware.
