The pastry case had to be formed with care so that it could stand proudly on the plate, then filled with game, poultry or pigeon and finished with savoury jelly as it cooled. In this illustration, the pie has a wonderfully architectural quality, with its fluted sides, rich golden colour and bright garnish giving it real table presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"902\" data-end=\"1134\"\u003eThis original 1896 plate has been carefully removed from a first edition copy for framing, so the print itself is genuinely Victorian and over 125 years old.
