A few dark birds pick about in the snow. Look closely and there is a flash of orange in the trees to the right, possibly a jacket, possibly a leaf that refused to fall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe paint is thick and confident, dragged and stabbed onto the board so the snow has real texture and the trunks sit proud of the surface. It is signed and dated RL 79 in the lower right, in the same bold hand as the rest, so it is properly of its moment: the winter of 1979 in Britain was a famous one, and it is easy to imagine this being painted from a window while the country ground to a halt. Whoever RL was, they could paint, and they were not fussy about it, which is precisely why the picture works. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIt is framed in a simple white painted wooden frame with a flat inner slip, 44 cm by 42 cm overall, with a hanger on the back. The frame has light rubs and a few small knocks to the paint that suit the picture rather than fight it. Hang it in a hallway or a pale bedroom where the greys and plums can breathe, or lean it on a shelf against a dark green or navy wall for a bit of drama. It would also be a very good painting to live with through a winter and then move somewhere cooler in summer, which is a luxury few paintings deserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eExpressive mid century and 1970s landscapes with this much life in the brushwork are the ones that get snapped up first.
