This is a Modern British oil on board, unsigned, most likely mid to late 20th century, and it has the confidence that only comes from someone painting for the pleasure of it rather than to impress anyone. The pink pot on the left has nothing in it at all, which we find oddly charming, and a scatter of small yellow flowers floats above it as if they simply drifted off the table.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe colours are what stopped us. Lavender and violet laid on in every direction with a loaded brush, a teal vase in the middle glowing against it, a plum pot to the right and those hot red flowers punching through the whole thing. The board was primed in a burnt orange that shows at the edges and peeks through the purple in places, which gives the painting a warmth it would not have otherwise. It sits in a clean white float frame with a deep rebate, measuring 44 x 54 cm overall, with the board itself visible right to its ragged edges and no glass to fight the light. The back is neatly finished with hanging wire and ready to go straight on the wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eNaive still life like this works almost anywhere, which is part of the appeal. We have it on a white shelf here and it does a lot of heavy lifting for a small painting. It would be lovely in a kitchen or hallway where the colour can be enjoyed in passing, propped on a mantelpiece rather than hung, or grouped with two or three other small oils in a loose gallery arrangement. It also suits a child's room beautifully, though we would not tell the grown ups that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThere is a good market for unsigned Modern British painting at the moment, and this is exactly why.
